5 tips for hand eczema - this makes a difference

Hand eczema is common, especially in the winter months. Cold, frequent hand washing and dry indoor air weaken the skin barrier, and the hands are often the first to react. Here are 5 tips for hand eczema – to soothe and prevent new outbreaks.

1. Lubricate the skin frequently - twice a day is not enough

Hands are washed many times during the day, and each wash removes protective lipids from the skin. The essential treatment is lubrication to keep the skin barrier intact. Tip: Lubricate morning/evening/after work and after each hand wash, and keep moisturizer readily available.

  • Use a fragrance-free cream with a high fat content.
  • Look for ingredients like shea butter, squalane, and ceramides.

2. Choose the right soap

Harsh soaps and antibacterial products can worsen eczema by drying out the skin and further weakening the skin barrier.

TIP FOR HAND ECZEMA! Perfume-free soap with a creamy consistency that leaves the skin soft and hydrated after washing. Perfect for adults and children with dry hands, atopic skin or hand eczema.

3. Protect your hands from cold and moisture

You should be the first in your group of friends to start wearing gloves. It doesn't take much cold to trigger eczema. Start wearing gloves in early fall. Cold air and wet hands are a tough combination for eczema-prone skin. Avoid wool and other textured fabrics. Bamboo, cotton, and silk are best for eczema.

5. Avoid contact with perfume and other irritants

Cleaning products, foods and other chemicals can trigger or worsen eczema. Avoid contact with perfume and limit contact with water to a minimum. This means that everything you use on your body should be perfume-free: laundry detergent, shampoo, conditioner, styling products - basically anything you touch with your hands.

Avoid this to trigger breakouts

  • Use gloves marked for sensitive skin when cleaning and washing dishes, disposable gloves when chopping onions, garlic, etc. If you have a lot of eczema, you can also wash your hair with gloves on for a period of time so your hands can rest.
  • Wash new clothes with perfume-free laundry detergent before use.
  • Avoid anything that contains natural or artificial fragrance on your skin and hair. If you have used perfumed shampoo, touching your hair after washing and blow-drying will trigger eczema, according to experience.
  • Salt water baths for the hands help wounds heal faster. 10 min. 2 times a day for severe eczema. Rinse, apply cortisone (from a doctor) and Favn extra nourishing cream with ceramides.
  • Seek advice from a dermatologist and advocacy organizations. We collaborate with the Norwegian Psoriasis and Eczema Association to promote good skin health.
