Victoria's skin journey with: Acne, sensitive skin and perioral dermatitis

When Victoria Skjelvand was a teenager, both her hormones and her skin began to change. Her periods stopped for long periods, and what started as small spots on her forehead and cheeks gradually developed into persistent acne. It was the beginning of a long journey marked by skin challenges with acne, sensitive skin, perioral dermatitis, and an ever-increasing interest in health.
Today, Victoria is the founder behind Sunnere Hjem, but her interest in health started long before the business was founded.
– Looking back, I'm actually grateful for the journey. Not because it was easy, but because it taught me to ask questions, listen to my body and see health in a broader perspective, she says.
Acne, insecurity and frustration
As a teenager, Victoria played soccer and was very active. She ate well and had a good appetite, but when her period stopped for a while, she went to see a gynecologist. She was told that a possible explanation could be that she was thin, and the conversation quickly turned to hormones. The solution was birth control pills.
Around the same time, my skin started to change. What started with small blemishes eventually developed into a long period of acne, insecurity, and frustration.
Searching for answers
Like many others, Victoria tried everything to get her skin under control. She cut out sugar and dairy, tried countless skincare products, and visited both a skin care professional and a dermatologist.
– I used strong creams that caused itching and dried out the skin. Eventually I took several courses of antibiotics. They helped for a while, but the problems always returned, she says.
Finally, she started treatment with isotretinoin. The treatment was incredibly demanding, but it yielded results.
– It gave me my skin back, and for that I am very grateful.
At the same time, her interest in health, nutrition and ingredients grew. Victoria became increasingly curious about the connection between skin, hormones and lifestyle, and began to see skin problems in a larger context.
The most important thing my skin taught me
Although Victoria's skin is now in better balance, the experience remains. She doesn't know if her story would have been different if she had been given different advice as a teenager. In retrospect, she has often thought that she wishes there had been more focus on why her period didn't come in the first place, and what role nutrition and lifestyle could play.
-I also don't know if the birth control pills had anything to do with my skin problems. I can't know for sure today. But the whole experience made me more concerned with holistic health.
Over the years, she began to question why her body reacted the way it did, instead of just focusing on the symptoms.
She learned that products and treatments can be important tools, but that good skin health is rarely about one single solution alone: Nutrition, sleep, stress, hormones, and everything we surround ourselves with come into play.
– For me, the best results have come when good habits, a holistic focus on health and skincare that supports the skin come together.
A new skin challenge: perioral dermatitis
Several years after her acne was under control, Victoria experienced a new skin challenge. The skin around her nose became red and irritated, and small bumps appeared. The problems came and went, and like many others, she tried to solve the problem with more products and richer creams.
–I applied more creams, tried different products and often covered the redness with makeup. But it kept coming back. Gradually, she began to suspect that it might be perioral dermatitis.
Instead of adding more, she chose to use fewer products on her skin and this seems to be helping. Her skincare routine was simplified and she became more aware of the ingredients in her products.
The skincare that works on my sensitive skin
As her interest in health grew, Victoria also became more concerned with what she put on her skin.
For her, skincare is about more than just how her skin looks. She wants products with thoughtful ingredients that are suitable for sensitive skin, without perfumes and essential oils that can be irritating.
Today, her skincare routine consists of Barrier Care Cleanser and Ectoin Light Moisturiser from RÅ Skincare. On a daily basis, she also uses Correcting Serum and Multi-Active Serum to work on skin texture, elasticity and fine lines.
When perioral dermatitis flares up, she simplifies her routine considerably. “Then I just use cleanser and moisturizer. I’ve learned that skin often needs rest, not more products.”
– All facial products are free of perfume and essential oils, while being developed with a focus on the skin barrier. My skin feels softer, more hydrated and calmer when I use them. She also appreciates that the products are marked with production and best before dates.
– I like that the products have a best before date and are stored in the refrigerator. It gives me a feeling that the emphasis is on pure and active ingredients, and that quality is prioritized over the longest possible shelf life.
Looking back, Victoria sees a clear connection between the skin challenges she experienced and the interest in health that later emerged.
What started with questions about skin evolved into a greater curiosity about ingredients, hormones, lifestyle and how our everyday choices can affect our health over time.
Today, that curiosity has become an important part of both her private life and her work through Sunnere Hjem.
– If my story can help someone feel less alone, ask a few more questions, or understand their body a little better, then it has been worth sharing.
